A 300-Year Coffee Legacy
Coffee arrived in Puerto Rico around 1736 from Martinique. By 1898, the island was the sixth-largest coffee exporter in the world, shipping to Hamburg, Vienna, Barcelona, and Le Havre.
The Coffee of Popes and Kings: Between the 1950s-60s, the Vatican purchased 15,000 quintals per year of Puerto Rican coffee. President Theodore Roosevelt told the Governor in 1903 that he and his family "would drink no other kind."
Resilience: Three hurricanes — San Ciriaco (1899), San Felipe (1928), and Maria (2017) — devastated the coffee crop. But Puerto Rico always comes back. After Maria, over 2 million new seedlings were planted, and by 2022, production exceeded pre-hurricane levels. Today, 2,400+ farming families carry the tradition forward.
